Use biodegradable nappy liners with every cotton nappy, they allow solids to be flushed away without soiling the nappy (too much). Ultra-liners are thicker than the fine potato starch liners so tend to lie flatter on active babies. They are strong enough to be washed and can double as a baby wipe when wet.
